Job Summary: A Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and other mechanical systems in trucks, buses, and other heavy equipment. The role involves diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventive maintenance, and ensuring the safety and reliability of diesel-powered vehicles. Key Responsibilities: Inspection and Diagnostics: Conduct thorough inspections of diesel engines, vehicles, and equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, or structural problems. Use diagnostic tools and computers to assess engine performance and troubleshoot issues. Perform routine safety checks and identify potential areas of concern. Repair and Maintenance: Repair and replace damaged or worn-out parts, such as engine components, fuel systems, transmissions, and exhaust systems. Perform routine maintenance tasks including oil changes, filter replacements, tire repairs, and brake services. Troubleshoot engine malfunctions and ensure repairs are done efficiently and correctly. Preventive Maintenance: Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks to prevent mechanical failures and extend the lifespan of diesel vehicles and equipment. Keep records of maintenance schedules, repairs, and inspections for compliance with industry regulations and company standards. Part and Equipment Management: Maintain an inventory of necessary tools, parts, and equipment for repairs and maintenance. Order parts and supplies when required, ensuring timely and cost-effective sourcing. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations during all maintenance and repair procedures. Ensure that diesel engines and vehicles meet local and federal environmental standards for emissions and noise. Customer Service and Communication: Communicate with drivers and supervisors to understand mechanical issues and report on the status of repairs. Provide advice on the care and maintenance of diesel-powered equipment. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of work performed, including parts used and time spent on repairs. Update maintenance logs and prepare reports on vehicle status for management. Skills and Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of formal training in diesel technology or related field is preferred. Experience: Previous experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance, preferably in a fleet or heavy equipment environment. Technical Skills: Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, manuals, and computer systems related to diesel engine management. Physical Stamina: Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including lifting heavy components and working in confined spaces. Problem-Solving: Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical issues. Communication Skills: Ability to clearly communicate with team members, supervisors, and customers. Attention to Detail: Ability to work carefully and accurately, ensuring that all repairs meet high standards. Working Conditions: Full-time position with potential for overtime. Work in a workshop, garage, or on-site locations. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions when working on-site or with heavy equipment. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy parts and tools (up to 50 lbs). Ability to work in awkward positions and confined spaces. Regular use of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and power tools.
